Overview

Vestibular rehabilitation is an essential part of the dizzy patient’s journey, and virtual reality provides exciting and engaging methods for performing vestibular rehabilitation. At the end of this session learners will understand the concept of virtual reality and its application in vestibular rehabilitation. The application of virtual reality will be evaluated and applied to the training of eye movements and postural control in vestibular rehabilitation, including dual tasking to provide more challenging tasks to progress the training.

  • Analyse the role of virtual reality for vestibular rehabilitation
  • Describe the utilisation of VR in gaze and postural control vestibular rehabilitation
  • Explain the application of dual tasking in VR to progress balance rehabilitation integration

Course Presenter:

Darren Whelan:

Darren holds an undergraduate degree in audiology and postgraduate master’s degrees in health science, neurophysiology, and clinical research. His resumé includes several clinical positions in the National Health Service (NHS). Prior to his current occupation as an International Clinical Trainer in the Interacoustics Academy, Darren held a clinical audiology and research scientist role in the UK, where he investigated patients with auditory and vestibular pathology, and managed a portfolio of NIHR adopted research studies. He has been a guest speaker at national and international conventions, enjoys teaching and providing clinical insights on the management of patients with dizziness and is a contributing author on published audiological and vestibular articles. Darren is an adjunct professor at Salus University in the USA, lecturing on the Doctor of Audiology degree.

Cassandra Anderson

Cassandra holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and has served as a licensed physical therapist for 11 years. She began her career in an inpatient rehab setting working primarily with patients post-stroke and then transitioned to the outpatient setting working primarily with the vestibular/balance population in a multidisciplinary ENT and neurology clinics. Cassie has participated in research and quality improvement projects aimed at incorporating technology into clinical practice and has presented at both the national and international level.
