vHIT vs Caloric Test: Which One to Use and When do I Need Both?

Description

This course will focus on deconstructing the similarities and differences between vHIT and caloric testing, using case study examples to help participants understand how to include each or both tests into their clinical assessment. To gain the most benefit from this session it is expected that you are aware of the basic physiology, test process and interpretation of the video head impulse test

Learning Objectives

  • Be able to describe which test to do first and when both the caloric test and vHIT are required for optimal assessment
  • Understand the interdependencies between vHIT and calorics
  • Be able to explain expected vHIT results in a variety of vestibular and central pathologies

Dr. Kamran Barin
Kamran Barin, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor Emeritus, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and Department of Speech & Hearing Science, The Ohio State University. He established and served as the Director of the Balance Disorders Clinic at the Ohio State University Medical Center for over 25 years until his retirement in June 2011. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in Electrical/Biomedical Engineering from the Ohio State University. He has published over 80 articles and book chapters and has taught national and international courses and seminars in different areas of vestibular assessment and rehabilitation.
